Habshan Gas Facility Suspends Operations After Defense Interception Debris

Abu Dhabi's Habshan gas facility has suspended operations following a successful air defense interception on April 8 that resulted in falling debris causing fires and injuries at the complex. Two Emirati workers and one Indian national were injured in the incident.

The Incident

The falling shrapnel from the defensive engagement ignited multiple fires across sections of the facility. The fires were contained, and the facility was shut down while damage assessments are underway. Habshan is a critical component of the UAE's energy infrastructure, processing significant volumes of gas for domestic consumption and international export.

Operational Impact

The temporary suspension marks the second shutdown of Habshan in recent days, following an earlier incident on April 3 that resulted in one contractor fatality during evacuation and injuries to four others. Despite these interruptions, ADNOC Gas has maintained supply to domestic and international customers through its integrated network of alternative processing plants and pipeline routing.

The facility's operations remain suspended pending completion of structural and safety reviews. Officials have indicated that further updates on the incident and restoration timeline will be provided as assessments progress.

Worker Safety

The injuries sustained in the April 8 incident have renewed focus on emergency protocols at energy facilities operating in active defense engagement zones. The April 3 incident highlighted vulnerabilities in evacuation procedures when air defense operations are underway. Facility operators are reviewing contingency procedures to better protect workers during defensive operations.
