Syria and UAE Explore Enhanced Economic Ties Amid Regional Reintegration
Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad Yisr Barnieh expressed optimism about the development of economic and financial relations with the United Arab Emirates during high-level talks in Abu Dhabi on 28 September 2026, held alongside the Arab Monetary Fund’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The discussions, which included engagement with UAE officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank, focused on re-establishing communication channels to strengthen collaboration in economic and financial fields. No formal agreements were announced, but both sides affirmed a shared commitment to exploring pathways for renewed cooperation.
The Arab Monetary Fund (AMF), headquartered in Abu Dhabi, played a key role in facilitating these dialogue sessions. The AMF continues to support regional financial integration initiatives, including its cross-border payment platform, Buna, which contributes to greater financial connectivity among Arab nations.
Trade between the UAE and Syria has shown signs of recovery, with growing interest from Emirati businesses in Syrian agricultural exports and other non-oil sectors. While specific trade figures or major infrastructure projects were not confirmed in official statements, both governments recognize the potential for deeper economic engagement as Syria re-engages with regional institutions.
The UAE’s approach reflects a broader regional trend of reintegration, with Syria participating in key Arab financial forums. For the UAE, this engagement supports long-term stability and economic cooperation in the region, consistent with its strategic priorities.
